Garage gym glossary
Unsure of some of the terminology we use? Here is where we clear it up. If you do not see it, reach out and we will add it.
- Athlete Brief: Where we explain each day’s workout in more detail.
- Block Zero: Our programmed warm-up. Block Zero is the first 10 minutes of your workout.
- Programming Blocks: 1 block = 10 minutes. There are 5 blocks per training session (3 blocks for the 3-Block track).
- 30:30 / 60:60 intervals: On:Off timing for conditioning work: alternating periods of effort and rest (e.g. 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off).
- Zone X (2, 3, 4+): Heart-rate intensity zones, from Zone 2 (about 60–70% of max HR) up through Zone 5 (90%+).
- Gain / Pain / Sustain: Our categories for different energy-system efforts across a training session.
- Negatives: Performing a rep as slow as possible on the eccentric (lowering) portion of the lift.
- EMOM: Every Minute On the Minute. Perform the exercise at the start of each minute, then rest until the next minute begins.
- AMRAP: As Many Reps (or Rounds) As Possible in the given time.
- AFAP: As Fast As Possible.
- Complex: A series of movements performed unbroken, without setting the equipment down from one to the next.
- IWT: Interval Weight Training: combining moderate weights with cardio and rest periods.
- Equipment shorthand: KB = kettlebell, DB = dumbbell, BB = barbell, SB = sandbag, WB = wall ball, BW = bodyweight.
